Time for concrete pilings to go

It looks as if a settlement is already in hand to address the city’s concern over 28 huge pilings being left around historic Ewa Field. The concrete barriers left around the World War II site by the nonprofit American Veterans Hawaii can be carted away, according to the group’s leader.

The action seemingly was taken with good intentions, to protect the site from vandals, but they lacked the required permits, officials said.

It’s surprising to see so much surplus donated, in a place where so little comes for free. Meanwhile, some other steps are needed to protect the field.

Be aware and take care: It’s flu season

With Halloween just a few weeks away, we’re well into the fall season and — unfortunately — the start of flu season. The state Health Department’s annual Stop Flu at School program — free shots for students in kindergarten through eighth grade — launched Monday and continues through early December.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends an annual flu vaccination for just about everyone, starting with six-months-old infants. The CDC warns that people with the flu can spread it to others up to 6 feet away with a sneeze, cough or even just talking. According to a preliminary report, the 2017-18 season was the deadliest in about four decades. In 80 percent of the deaths, the flu victim had not received a vaccination, according to the CDC.
