Hawaii won two matches but lost three spots in Monday’s NCAA women’s volleyball Ratings Percentage Index.
The Rainbow Wahine (11-6, 7-1 Big West) were at 73 in the computer-generated rankings that include strength of schedule. Hawaii had moved up to 70 last week after opening at 100 in the inaugural RPI on Oct. 1.
The Big West Conference teams with higher RPIs than Hawaii are No. 12 Cal Poly (17-1, 7-0), which remained at 18, and UC Irvine (11-7, 6-1), which dropped four spots to 51. Other opponents ahead of the Wahine are No. 16 Oregon (25), Pepperdine (40), Portland (49) and Kansas State (66).
Also in Monday’s AVCA Coaches Top 25, Brigham Young (18-0) remained at No. 1, receiving 60 first-place votes. Stanford (16-1) stayed at No. 2 and had the remaining four votes.
Hawaii makes its third road trip of the season this week, traveling for matches at UC Riverside on Friday and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.
UH’s Ngan tied for fifth in Simi Valley
University of Hawaii sophomore Justin Ngan is tied for fifth after firing a 3-under-par 141 through 35 holes at the Bill Cullum Invitational on Monday in Simi Valley, Calif.
Ngan, a Baldwin High graduate, shot a 2-under 70 in the first round and was at 1 under through 17 holes in the second round when play was suspended due to darkness at Wood Ranch Golf Course.
UC Santa Barbara’s Zach Smith and UCLA’s Bryan Wiyang Teoh are tied for first at 138.
>> Hawaii Hilo’s Warren Miller and Jared Kinoshita are tied for 31st after shooting even-par 72s in Monday’s first round of the Dixie State Regional Preview in St. George, Utah.
The Vulcans are tied for 19th after carding an 11-over 299 during a rain-shortened round at The Ledges Golf Club.
Dominican’s Jake Quast leads at 6 under through 13 holes.
HPU’s Spencer wins PacWest weekly honor
Hawaii Pacific goalkeeper Lauren Spencer was selected as the PacWest women’s soccer defender of the week, the conference announced Monday.
Spencer, a senior from Oxford, Mich., made four saves in a 1-1 tie against Biola and eight more in a 1-0 victory over Concordia.
It was the second time this season Spencer has won the weekly honor.
