The treasurer of the
Hawaii Youth Soccer Association Maui Youth League is expected to plead guilty in federal court Nov. 1 to stealing $180,203 from the league.
Federal prosecutors
Friday charged Riki Maeda with one count of bank fraud.
Prosecutors say Maeda, 57, stole the money between September 2014 and March of this year by writing
unauthorized checks made payable to himself from
the HYSA bank account, then depositing the checks into his personal bank
account.
In order to make the checks appear legitimate, prosecutors say Maeda forged the signatures of other HYSA Maui officials who had signatory authority over the league’s bank
account. Maeda is also
accused of writing false
information on the memo sections of the checks to make it appear that the checks had been issued to reimburse him for legitimate HYSA Maui expenses.
