The state Health Department is warning the public to remain out of the Ala Wai Canal near Kahakai Drive due to an estimated 25 gallons of raw sewage that entered the waters there.
The department was notified of approximately 150 gallons of wastewater discharged from an apartment complex next door to the Hawai‘i Convention Center at 1848 Kahakai Drive, of which an estimated 25 gallons entered the canal. The spill occurred at about 8:22 a.m. Monday and was stopped at about 9:15 a.m.
Warning signs will be posted, and the public is advised to remain out of the waters until signs have been removed.
The Ala Wai Canal wastewater discharge is the second to occur in the last few days, following another spill Friday from an overflowing manhole near 1260 Richard Lane. Approximately 1,125 gallons of raw wastewater went into Kahili Stream and Keehi Lagoon due to grease and pipe repair material that clogged a sewer pipe.
The pubic is also advised to stay out of Kalihi Stream and Keehi Lagoon until signs there have been taken down.

Advisories issued for 3 Windward areas
The state Health Department issued brown-water advisories Monday morning for Kailua Bay, Waimanalo Beach Park and Waimanalo Bay State Recreational Area on Oahu after rain resulted in stormwater runoff entering into coastal waters.
Early Monday afternoon the department also issued a brown-water advisory for Pounders Beach in Laie.
The public is advised to stay out of floodwaters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewers, manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris. While not all coastal areas may be affected by runoff, the public is generally advised to stay out if the water is brown, to practice good personal hygiene and follow up with a primary care physician with health concerns.

Nightly H-1 lane closures start this week
A portion of the H-1 freeway in Pearl City and Aiea will be closed starting Thursday instead of Wednesday evening, as originally announced, for additional concrete panel work, according to the state Department of Transportation.
On Thursday crews will be striping and then, in the following days, installing an additional 128 precast concrete panels on the eastbound H-1 freeway near the Sears Distribution Center in Pearl City and on the eastbound H-1 freeway before the Aiea Heights Drive overpass.
The closures have been updated to reflect only eastbound closures from Thursday to Sunday.
State officials said the closures are necessary in order to facilitate survey layout, saw cutting of existing pavement, and panel setting. These panels were not part of Phase 1 of the H-1 Shoulder and Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation (PCCP) project that rehabilitated rough asphalt segments of the freeway. For that phase, completed in mid- August, crews installed 1,279 precast concrete panels.
The installation of the additional panels is expected to be done in late November.
