Peter Jung was the only golfer to shoot in the 60s Sunday, pulling ahead to win the 16th Turtle Bay Open, presented by TravisMathew.
This summer, Jung captured the Kaʻanapali Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Match Play Championship and represented Hawaii in the Hogan Cup.
Sunday, he birdied the first three holes at Turtle Bay’s Palmer Course and closed with a 69 to finish at 5-under-par 139. He was two shots ahead of Tyler Isono (72) and Shawn Sakoda (70).
Mike Kawate also ended up at 141, to win the senior championship by four shots over Carl Ho. Katrina Huang (76—150) and Kasandra Shriver (84—170) won the Women’s A and B flights.
Other flight winners were Jon-Michael Tubai (81—151) in A, Jeff Irvine (80—156) in B and Marc Nakagawa (90—171) in C.
Hawaii juniors prepare for Japan
Hawaii’s finest juniors will once again take on the best in Japan in the 12th annual Asia Pacific Junior Cup. The Ryder Cup-style tournament will be Nov. 4-6 at Waikoloa Kings’.
The Cup was played in Hawaii the first nine years, then was hosted by the Japan High School Golf Association in Miyazaki the past two. It is scheduled to rotate between Waikoloa and Miyazaki from now on.
The Hawaii State Junior Golf Association announced its team recently, with the 16 players earning points at designated events during the year.
Hawaii team members are: Lana Calibuso-Kwee from Maui, Isaiah Kanno, Lacey Uchida and Pono Yanagi, all from Hilo, and, from Oahu, Kaylee Akagi, Joshua Chung, Kolbe Irei, Peter Jung, Alex Kam, Karissa Kilby, Noah Koshi, Kyung Eun Lee, Davis Lee, Myah McDonald, Jake Sequin and Jacob Torres.
The tournament is open to the public, with a practice round on Nov. 3, followed by fourball match play the next day, foursomes on Nov. 5 and singles matches the final day.
