Maui’s Dusty Payne returned to the water for the first time since January and won his round three heat of the HIC Pro on Tuesday at Sunset Beach.
The HIC Pro, a World Surf League Men’s Qualifying Series 3,000 event, finished Day 2 despite flood warnings around the island.
Having not surfed since January after suffering major injuries to his skull, jaw and face at Pipeline, Payne recorded wave scores of 7.40 and 4.2o to claim his heat.
The North Shore’s Barron Mamiya produced the event’s best heat total of 17.16 (out of a possible 20) and made his way into Round 4.
Hawaii’s Kiron Jabour scored one of the highest single-wave scores of the morning with an 8.17.
Other Hawaii surfers who advanced out of round three with either first- or second-place finishes include: Payne, Mamiya, Jabour, Cody Young, Luke Shepardson, Joshua Moniz and Tanner Hendrickson.
The event will continue today, surf permitting.
Chaminade men’s golf in 15th
The Chaminade men’s golf team sits in 15th place after Tuesday’s second round at the Dennis Rose Invitational in Waikoloa.
The ’Swords shot 325 for the round for a 36-hole total of 636.
Caleb Ah Mow leads Chaminade with a 7-over-par 79 with a two-day total of 159.
Hawaii Hilo’s Jared Kinoshita leads all individuals with a 7-under-par 137 and has a three-shot lead heading into today’s final round, which begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
