Kauai’s Kirby Yates narrowly missed out on making the National League squad for the MLB All-Star Game this summer but has earned a place on the MLB All-Star team that will play in Japan next month.
The MLB team will also hold public workouts Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.) at Les Murakami Stadium.
Yates had a 5-3 record with a 2.14 earned-run average and 12 saves as the set-up man and later closer for the San Diego Padres this season.
His second child, son Kove, was born a week before the summer All-Star Game.
The All-Star Series will feature seven games (including one exhibition) across Japan, Nov. 8-15.
Also named to the roster were two members of the world champion Boston Red Sox, pitchers Brian Johnson and Hector Velázquez; and three Dodgers, pitcher Kenta Maeda and utility players Chris Taylor and Enrique Hernandez.
Other players on the roster, some of whom were previously announced, include Seattle Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger, Miami Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto, catcher Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals, infielder Eugenio Suárez of the Cincinnati Reds, outfielder Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals, outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Rhys Hoskins and infielder Carlos Santana and Kansas City Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield.
Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich, who was announced earlier, has withdrawn.
Don Mattingly will manage the MLB team. His coaching staff includes Edgar Martinez, Hideki Matsui, Fredi González, Hensley Meulens, Brent Strom and Henry Blanco.
