Michael Grabowski, a golfer from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, captured the second annual Hawaii State Golf Association Maui Amateur last weekend at the Wailea Blue and Gold Courses.
Grabowski shot rounds of 74-72 to beat Thayne Costa by a shot.
Kula’s David Good opened with a 65 and won the senior flight by eight with a 138 total. Lahaina’s Clive Kegel was second.
John Conners, from Las Vegas, earned overall low net honors with a 145 total — one shot better than Kula’s Lisa Judge. Hilo’s Stacy Higa took senior low net honors with 136.
Maui’s Kim rises in Q-Series
Former Maui resident Kyung Kim shot 70 in the final two rounds at Pinehurst No. 6 last week and was 14th going into the final week of the LPGA’s new Q-Series.
The final 72 holes began Wednesday at Pinehurst No. 7. The top-45 finishers Saturday, and ties, receive LPGA membership. The remaining competitors earn Symetra Tour status.
Punahou graduate Stephanie Kono went into the second week tied for 43rd, but a 69 Wednesday pulled her into 21st at 363. Kim is a shot back and 28th.
McGinnis claims HSWGA event
Heather McGinnis won the fourth annual Hawaii State Women’s Golf Association Member Stroke Play Championship. The wrong champion was listed last week.
McGinnis, a registered nurse who went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, became the first golfer other than Patricia Ehrhart to win the tournament.
McGinnis shot 78 both days to beat Yindi Fowler by a shot.
