Hawaii’s Kiron Jabour posted the highest single-wave score of the day, and rode it to a win at the HIC Pro at Sunset Beach.
After qualifying second in the semifinals with a composite score of 10.43, Jabour posted a score of 8.00 on his first wave of the finals, the best score of the day. Jabour finished with a combined score of 14.00 in the finals, defeating O’Neill Massin of French Polynesia and Beyrick De Vries and Slade Prestwich of South Africa. Massin had a score of 11.40. De Vries and Prestwich only posted scores on their first waves.
HPU’s Janssen earns preseason honor
Senior Jonathan Janssen of the Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team was named the PacWest Preseason Player of the Year, as voted on by PacWest coaches.
Chaminade was picked to finish fourth, HPU fifth, and Hawaii Hilo eighth in the preseason poll. Point Loma was picked first, getting 10 of the 12 first-place votes.
Kinoshita, Patrick win at Rose Intercollegiate
Hawaii Hilo’s Jared Kinoshita and Taylor Patrick claimed the top two spots, leading the Vulcans to the team championship at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on Wednesday at Waikoloa.
Kinoshita finished at 11-under 205, a school record for three rounds. Patrick was four shots back at 7-under 209. As a team, the Vulcans finished the tournament at 7-under 857, seven shots ahead of Western Washington.
By winning the tournament, the Vulcans knocked off three teams ranked in the top 10 nationally in Western Washington (No. 2), Dixie State (No. 6), and Sonoma State (No. 7).
