The Coast Guard continued its search Monday morning for a missing fisherman in waters off Maui but last night suspended its search for another fisherman off Kauai.
The search for the fisherman off Maui was initiated Sunday afternoon after watch-standers received a distress call from the master of the 68-foot fishing vessel Kawaiola.
The master reported a crew member fell overboard about 80 miles off Maui on Sunday afternoon, said the Coast Guard in a news release. He was last seen aboard the vessel at 2:30 p.m. that day. The distress call was made about 5:10 p.m. after the crew later realized he was no longer on deck.
The crew member is described as 5 feet, 6 inches tall and approximately 130 pounds. He was last seen wearing jeans.
Coast Guard Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Amanda Wyrick said a C-130 plane and the cutter Kittiwake were deployed Monday morning to continue the search for the crew member.
The Coast Guard called off its search for a missing 55-year-old fisherman in waters off Kauai.
Darrall Pascua was last seen attempting to retrieve his fishing net in waters off of Lydgate Beach when his friend lost sight of him about 50 yards from shore Saturday morning. He was last seen wearing red, yellow and green swim trunks and fins.
“The Coast Guard has suspended the active search pending new updates,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Dustin Costa, a command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu.
