Erik Scheive scored 13 points and Chaminade hung on for a 69-67 victory over Alaska Fairbanks in Friday’s opener of the PacWest/GNAC Challenge at McCabe Gym.
The Silverswords (1-0) led 64-54 with 2:49 remaining only to have the Nanooks (0-1) rally to within 68-67 with eight seconds left. Following a free throw by Chaminade’s Tyler Cartaino, Nick Anderson blocked Aushanti Potts-Woods’ jumper as time expired to preserve the win.
Tymoryae Glover led Fairbanks with 19 points.
>> In Friday’s earlier game at McCabe, PacWest preseason player of the year Jonathan Janssen scored 21 points and Neema Namdar added 15 — all on 3-pointers — but it was not enough as Hawaii Pacific lost to Alaska Anchorage 83-79.
The Sharks (0-1) led 61-55 with 12:32 remaining only to have the Seawolves (3-0) go on a 9-0 run to take the lead for good with 8:15 to go. Niko Bevens led Anchorage with 28 points, 25 in the first half, and finished 8-for-13 on 3-pointers.
HPU women fall to Cal State San Marcos
Samantha Lambrigtsen scored 15 points and Alysha Marcucci added 13 points and five steals, but the Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team lost to Cal State San Marcos 64-57 on Friday in San Marcos, Calif.
The Sharks fell to 0-1. Jon’Nae Vermillion finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars (1-0).
Hawaii Hilo volleyball outlasts HPU
Bria Beale finished with 17 kills and Ashton Jessee added 14 as the Hawaii Hilo volleyball team outlasted Hawaii Pacific 25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-8 on Friday at St. Andrew’s Gym.
The Vulcans improved to 21-6, 17-4 PacWest.
Cameryn Collie had 23 kills for the Sharks (12-15, 11-10).

UH cross country finishes in 35th place
The University of Hawaii cross country team concluded the season with a 35th-place finish at the NCAA West Regional on Friday in Sacramento, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine’s top finisher was senior Haley Beaumont, who finished 205th overall by covering the 6K course in 22:59.6. Boise State’s Allie Ostrander won in 19:09.0.
Hawaii logged 1,097 points with an average time of 23:45. Oregon won the 36-team meet with 44 points and an average time of 19:43.
Manuel, Macedo win heats in Australia
Hawaii’s Malia Manuel and Summer Macedo won their third-round heats at the Port Stephens Toyota Pro surfing event today in Port Stephens, Australia.
Manuel had a two-wave total of 14.60 and Macedo posted a 12.87 in the QS6,000 event.
Hawaii’s Keala Tomoda-Bannert, who surfed in the same heat as Manuel, finished second with a 13.13.
Local surfer Zoe McDougall was eliminated after placing third in her heat with a 9.53.
