While helping drivers, Freeway Service Patrol faces traffic dangers

    The Freeway Service Patrol's 22 drivers patrol 29 miles of H-1 freeway and H-2 freeway up to Ka Uka Boulevard in 12 tow trucks, Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Here's a look at a day with operator David-Ray Ramos.

    Motorist Barbara Farr had a big smile as she thanked David-Ray Ramos for changing her tire. The Freeway Service Patrol assists drivers with disabled vehicles for free.

    Freeway Patrol Service Operator David-Ray Ramos jacked up Barbara Farr’s car Tuesday and changed her fl at tire as vehicles sped by along the H-1 freeway between Aiea and Pearl City. Ramos said he has a “close call” with drivers every day. “I can feel the brush” of traffi c, he said.

    Above, Ramos gave George Oki a ride after Oki’s 2005 Toyota Matrix was involved in a car accident. Ramos was the first to arrive on the scene of the crash on the westbound H-1 freeway before the Waipahu offramp.

Barbara Farr had seen the state Department of Transportation’s Freeway Serv­ice Patrol trucks plenty of times from her 2010 Volvo V50 wagon, but never needed their services until her tire blew out on the westbound H-1 freeway Tuesday morning. Read more
