Compete in a snowboard race. Control NASA’s latest Mars rover Curiosity. Design and build a roller coaster.
These are among dozens of immersive activities at MathAlive!, an interactive traveling exhibition opening today at Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and presented nationally by the Raytheon Company.
“Through interactive outreach efforts such as MathAlive! Hawaii, we are taking STEM education to young people around the world to help inspire the next generation of innovators,” said Raytheon communications director John Patterson.
The 4,000-square-foot exhibition encourages children to have fun with math by showing them its connection to things they love, including music, sports, movies, games and fashion. Throughout the different “experiences,” professionals, celebrities and visionaries explain how they use math in their fields.
MathAlive! provides a stimulating and challenging environment, helping youth see the connection between their future occupation and what they are learning at school, said Elissa Lines, executive director of Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.
The exhibit is designed for all ages and levels of math ability, but is ideal for students in grades 3-8. Other hands-on experiences include editing an animated movie, taking a 360-degree selfie, creating an original score as a music producer and recording your own weather telecast.
“MathAlive! has something for everyone and is a great family activity that prompts conversation, exploration and competition,” Lines said.
