Recently, high on Makapuu Head, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the historic Sandy Beach Initiative vote and honored the thousands of citizens who stood up to defend the wild Ka Iwi Coast during the past 45 years (“Plaque honors activists,” Star-Advertiser, Nov. 9).

We would be remiss if, in our celebration, we did not note the key role played by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Parks Division. From the first envisioning of the Ka Iwi Scenic Shoreline parklands back in 1988, to the plaque dedication, DLNR’s seasoned staff enthusiastically moved everything forward.

To a person, they have all been a great pleasure to work with. A big mahalo to the men and women of DLNR.
