Destiny Castro scored 33 points with 10 rebounds and nailed an off-balance 33-foot jumper as time expired, leading the Chaminade women’s basketball team to a 79-77 win over Minot (N.D.) State in the Oahu Thanksgiving Classic at St. Francis School Gym.
The win was Chaminade’s first over a non-PacWest Conference opponent since the program began in 2006. The Silverswords had lost 58 straight games to non-conference foes.
Castro scored 21 of her points in the fourth quarter, including 16 in the final three minutes, helping Chaminade erase a 72-60 deficit with just 3:04 remaining in the game. The Silverswords trailed for all but the first 33 seconds of the game.
Diamond Carter added 20 points and 10 boards for the Silverswords (1-1).
Madison Wald and Mariah Payne each had 17 points to lead the Beavers (3-1).
Hines earns weekly MPSF honor
The Hawaii swim team’s Phoebe Hines was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation female athlete of the week on Wednesday, the second Rainbow Wahine to earn the award this year.
Hines won the 500 and 1,650 freestyle at Texas A&M’s Art Adamson Invite last week. Her 1,650 time of 15 minutes, 41.25 seconds is the fastest in the country this season, while her time of 4:38.11 in the 500 is third-best.
She also was third in the 200 free and anchored UH’s second-place 800 free relay squad.
UH softball signs eight for 2020
Hawaii softball coach Bob Coolen announced on Wednesday the signing of eight players who will join the Rainbow Wahine for the 2020 season, three with local ties.
The local players are: Cira Bartolotti, a pitcher/outfielder from Kapolei; Ka’ena Keliinoi, a utility player from St. Francis; and Maya Nakamura, a shortstop/outfielder from Roosevelt. The mainland signees are: Amanda Ajari, a pitcher/third baseman from Benicia, Calif.; Haylee Clay, a catcher/second baseman from Whittier, Calif.; Lepepaina “Princess” Matavao, a utility player from Chino, Calif.; Jetta Nannen, a pitcher/third baseman from Longmont, Colo.; and Rachel Sabourin, a shortstop/second baseman/outfielder from Centennial, Colo.
