Time for Ige, Green to walk the talk

And so it begins — another four years of the Ige administration for Hawaii. Let’s hope having a new lieutenant governor in Josh Green is just the start of more-visible positives to come under Gov. David Ige; both were inaugurated into office Monday. A full slate of work awaits Ige and team, from delivering affordable housing and reducing homelessness, to buoying public education, to using innovative technologies to improve Hawaii’s lot. Ige touched on these aspects in broad strokes Monday, but for the sake of a better Hawaii, specific, exciting initiatives need to be unveiled in his State of the State address next month. Talking points are cheap; real action, though, is priceless.

Pali Lanes just keeps on rolling along

Amid ongoing gentrification in Kailua town, residents are rightly inclined to hold onto a piece of the community’s past. Even if the keepsake is a well-worn, cash-strapped bowling alley. Thanks, in part, to the efforts of residents who see Pali Lanes as integral to the area’s character, the Hawaii Historic Places Review Board last week added the 57-year-old hangout to its list of protected historic places. Landowner Alexander & Baldwin has now extended the bowling alley’s lease on the property until January 2020, to further assess how it fits into the neighborhood’s future.
