Aiea author and playwright Lee A. Tonouchi, aka “Da Pidgin Guerilla,” shares his gift-giving ideas for this year:
1. As one Pidgin writer, I love Pidgin puzzles. I thought this rebus design by Sticks + Stones wuz so clever. The 1+2=Tree kids T-shirt is da perfect gift for sharing Hawaii’s local culture with da keiki you love. Da fun is watching people stare at da design, then seeing how long it takes for them to get it.
Who knew kid clothes could be so much fun? Sizes go from 6-month onesie to children’s 6-8 tee; 100 percent cotton. Prices range from $20-$28.
Available at Kira Hawaii, Up & Riding, Splash! Hawaii (Kahala and Haleiwa locations), and Hopscotch or go to sticksxstoneshawaii.bigcartel.com.
2. My keiki wuz inside da store playing with this wooden mokupuni puzzle of Oahu. Cuz they wuz having so much fun, I went closer to check it out. I saw that when they removed da pieces it taught da names of da moku, da Hawaiian land divisions. And das when dada realized just how cool it wuz too!
In addition to Oahu, Nizzo Natural Precision also makes Maui, Kauai and Hawaii island puzzles. This is great for people who wanna give one smart gift das entertaining as well as eju-ma-cational!
$30 at Homegrown, Pearlridge Shopping Center Uptown or visit nnprecision.com.
3. Local company Overmind wanted for create one product that was eccentric as well as eco-friendly, so they came up with this stainless-steel, dishwasher-safe eating utensil.
The Spork is one neat gift for your eco-conscious friend or if you get one friend like my bestie Aiko Wan who saw this and thought it wuz just “mathematically divine.”
“Hah, how you figgah?” I asked.
She explained, “Because I hate to wash dishes, if I had this Spork, I’d have 50 percent less utensils to wash!”
You no can argue with math. Lol. Available for $20 at Mori by Art + Flea, South Shore Market or visit overmind.co.
4. I lucky I get friends who know I like unusual local kine food tings, cuz one day our dearest friend Daris Aoki just surprised us and left these sweet sour gummy bears at our house.
No mistake this for li hing gummies, cuz li hing stay all played out. We pretty much li-hing-ed everything there is for li hing already. This one get gummies and get little, chopped-up bits of lemon peel mixed in instead. They’re soooo addicting!
Try get this for people on top da continent who still get leftover li hing stuff you sent them from last year. This is da next big thing. Da new appeal is lemon peel, brah.
One 4-ounce bag costs $4.95 at Carousel Candyland, Kahala Mall.
5. Lotta times I see older couples arguing cuz somebody “forgot” their reading glasses. But da truth is, da person nevah forget ’em. Either they nevah carry ’em around in da first place cuz too bulky, or dey nevah like wear ’em around their neck cuz it’s just not styling.
“Oh, you no can see da menu?! Just drink waddah then!” is what I overheard somebody saying one time.
Foster Grant MicroVision glasses fold up to fit in one case das da size of one cigarette lighter. Try go get this for your spouse who always finds some reason to leave their reading glasses at home.
These specs are kinda pricey at $30, but das cheaper than marriage counseling, no? Available at Longs Drugs stores.
Try tell us what you stay loving this week by emailing features@staradvertiser. com. No forget da featured products might stay in short supply and maybe no more ’em available at da store locations; prices may stay varying, too.
