Titus Ekiru kept peeking over his shoulder, as if expecting to find a competitor on his heels.
But each glance only affirmed his status as a soon-to-be Honolulu Marathon champion.
“When I look back, nobody followed me,” Ekiru said after pulling away from the field to win the 46th annual race.
Ekiru separated from the pack of elite runners in Hawaii Kai and wasn’t threatened over the final nine miles while making a run at the race record on a brisk Sunday morning. He broke the tape at Kapiolani Park 2 hours, 9 minutes and 1 second after the 5 a.m. start to post the second-fastest time in the event’s history.
Ekiru, 26, placed fourth last year in his Honolulu debut and took more than three minutes off his finishing time in his return despite a strong headwind that hammered the runners on the outward leg along Kalanianaole Highway.
If not for the wind, the race record might have fallen for a third straight year.
Lawrence Cherono broke a 12-year-old record in his 2016 win and lowered the mark to 2:08:27 with his repeat victory last year. Ekiru, accompanied only by the official pace vehicle and motorcycle-mounted cameramen on his return leg, had the record in sight until the last 2 miles.
“I focused on the course record when I was 30 (kilometers),” said Ekiru, who claimed the $25,000 first prize. “But when I reached 40K I did not think I could make the record.”
After crossing the finish line, finishing in a walk through the tape, Ekiru had nearly a four-minute wait before being joined by fellow Kenyan Reuben Kerio, who earned runner-up status in his first Honolulu Marathon with a time of 2:12:59.
Vincent Yator, the last runner to keep in contact with Ekiru, finished third for the second straight year at 2:15:31.
“I was trying to push, but the humidity was too high,” Yator said. “This year was not easy race, it was tough for me.
“I have to be content with the time because that is done. I will accept it but I know I can improve next year.”
Wilson Chebet, the 2014 champion, did not finish after placing second the past three years.
Ekiru earned his first win at the Sevilla Marathon last year in Spain with a personal-best 2:07:43. He ran down the Ciudad De Mexico Marathon title in 2:10:38 on Aug. 26 before taking aim at Honolulu.
“When I finished Mexico I said I wanted to come to Honolulu and I trained with focus,” Ekiru said.
Ekiru tucked in with the pack of five elite runners and designated pacesetter Charles Cheruiyot early in the race. The group thinned in the wind and by the time the leaders hit the halfway point — 1:05:03 into the race — Cheruiyot, Ekiru and Yator had surged ahead.
Cheruiyot dropped back late in the loop through Hawaii Kai, his duties complete, and Ekiru picked up the pace to break away from Yator.
“When I see we are too slow, I said let me try to push my best,” Ekiru said.
Yator couldn’t answer and the smooth-striding Ekiru stretched the lead until his pursuers were out of his vision.
While churning out sub-five-minute miles late in the race, the clock represented Ekiru’s lone competitor.
“I said let me try to push and maybe I can break the course record,” he said.
Cherono’s 2017 record — and the $10,000 bonus for breaking the mark — survived another year and stands as the only time faster than Ekiru’s Sunday surge.
Kerio, 24, served as a pacesetter last year and appeared to fade midway through the race. But he charged back to claim $10,000 for finishing second while Yator picked up $5,000.
“I’m feeling good and I’m planning for next year and start preparation for next year,” Kerio said.
