University of Hawaii sophomores Justin Arcano and Justin Ngan fired a 6-under-par 66 to win the local qualifier for next year’s U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship.
“The Justins,” both Baldwin High School graduates, shot 31 on the back nine at The Club at Hokulia. The one-day qualifier was earlier this month.
Arcano and Ngan also qualified in 2017, after finishing second the previous two years.
The 2019 USGA national championship is May 24-29 at Bandon Dunes in Oregon.
The first-alternate team is Ben Garner and David Johnson, who finished three back. Second-alternate is the team of Adam Chiya and Andrew Otani, who shot 70.
SAND SHOTS MADE EASYPGA golf tip by Eddie Lee
If you are having a tough time getting out of the bunker remember this: See your face in the mirror. On the finish of your swing, imagine you are looking at a compact mirror and make sure you see your reflection in it. Keeping the clubface open allows the bounce of the club to glide under the ball and prevents the club from digging into the sand. Also remember to accelerate to create speed on the bottom of your swing. The sand shot gives you plenty of margin for error because the club never makes direct contact with the ball. The club contacts the sand and it is the sand that propels the ball out of the bunker.
