What better way to start 2019 than by sharing a story with your keiki that teaches qualities such as perseverance and kindness?
“Honu and Moa,” a Hawaiian version of Aesop’s fable “The Tortoise and the Hare,” follows Honu the green sea turtle and Moa the rooster. In the humorous retelling of the classic tale, Moa challenges Honu to compete in a race to decide who will own a Hawaiian spring. The loudmouthed and overconfident Moa sleeps in on the day of the race, then gets distracted along the way. Meanwhile:
“Honu swam with all her might, pushing her legs against the current. She rested on mossy boulders along the way. But, most of all, she swam,” author and illustrator Edna Cabcabin Moran writes in the book.
The hardcover, 32-page book is ideal for children ages 4-8 years old. The tale’s many lessons — such as the importance of being steadfast, not being boastful and treating our island waters with respect — are great for little ones to remember in the new year and beyond.
