For artwork you can encourage your kids to run, jump or even dance on, visit “Aqueous,” a large-scale interactive art installation open through Monday at Kapolei Commons.
Conceived by Hawaii-raised artist Jen Lewin, “Aqueous” features meandering pathways of light. In the daytime the interactive public sculpture changes colors and reflections, mirroring the sky upon a walkable dichroic surface. At night the installation is illuminated, engaging visitors to play on the glowing, flowing pathways.
“Aqueous” has been displayed at Burning Man in Nevada and South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, as well as at events in Singapore and Australia.
“Wherever we have taken it — and we’ve been to really different cultures — it’s immediately liked by babies up to grandparents,” the New York-based artist said in a press release. “There’s a quality of delight and playfulness that people really respond to.”
Lewin was inspired by her time growing up in Hawaii and uses that inspiration in the colors of the “Aqueous” installation, said Katie Kaanapu, a spokeswoman for Kapolei Commons.
“It is a hit with people of all ages,” Kaanapu said. “Additionally, it is important for the community to experience art in a way that is comfortable and fun.”
