The incoming recruiting class for Hawaii women’s volleyball is full of talent but also full of untested freshmen. The latter issue was addressed on Wednesday with the addition of junior Jolie Rasmussen, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter who is transferring after playing two seasons at Oregon.
Rasmussen played two seasons for the Ducks and received a medical redshirt last year. The Canyon Crest (Calif.) Academy graduate will have two seasons of eligibility for the Rainbow Wahine.
“Jolie is a seasoned, six-rotation outside hitter that will raise the level of intensity, experience and maturity the moment we open spring training,” Hawaii coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos said in a press release. “She comes to us from a great program, Oregon, and she will battle on the outside right away.
“From the moment I talked to Jolie on the phone, I could tell she would not only fit well in our gym culture, but her confident demeanor was something that stood out throughout the short recruiting process.”
Rasmussen earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors as both a freshman and a sophomore where the six-rotation player recorded 383 kills (2.52 kps), with 57 blocks, 215 digs and 34 aces. Coming out of high school, she was ranked No. 20 on PrepVolleyball.com’s Senior Aces list and was selected as an Under Armour second-team All-American.
Rasmussen joins the Class of 2019 that includes 6-foot hitter-middle Braelyn Akana (Kamehameha), 6-3 middle Amber Igiede (St. Michael, Baton Rouge, La.), 6-foot hitter Riley Wagoner (Dublin Coffman, Dublin, Ohio) and 6-3 middle Tiffany Westerberg (Maple Ridge, British Columbia). Hawaii lost seven players from an 18-9 team that finished second in the Big West (14-2) and lost in five to Baylor in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Nov. 29.
Pacific Rim Cup to add Hawaii all-star game
The Pacific Rim Cup 2019 announced on Wednesday an added component to the two-day soccer tournament scheduled for Feb. 10 at Aloha Stadium.
The “Hawaii All-Star Game” will feature players from Oahu’s Major Island Soccer Organization (MISO) against Fukushima Hamadori Selection U18, an under-18 select team from Fukushima, Japan.
The game will be played at 11 a.m., and admission will be free. The ensuing Pacific Rim Cup third place and championship matches will require a ticket.
The rosters for both selections will be announced in January, along with the unveiling of the jerseys.
