Honolulu police and prosecutors declined to press charges against Bobby Curran following the local sports broadcaster’s Dec. 27 arrest for allegedly assaulting his 15-year-old son.

At the time of the arrest, police said Curran, 63, and his son had been involved in a verbal dispute that escalated into a physical confrontation. The initial police report said that “the boy sustained injuries after being struck with a dangerous instrument.”

Curran said the “dangerous instrument” cited was a baseball bat, which he reached for to dissuade a physical confrontation after he saw his son standing near a spear gun. However, he said he only held the bat defensively across his chest and did not use it against his son, a prep football player.

Curran said he declined to make a statement to police to protect his son. During the subsequent investigation, the son updated his account with a written statement to police affirming that he had not been assaulted.

“We have never been physical in discipline with our children, and while this did escalate into a tussle, no punches were thrown, no injuries were incurred, and we are committed to better communication,” Curran said. “I love my boys and am looking forward to guiding them through their teenage years.”

The incident has been the subject of widespread speculation and conjecture in blogs and other online forums since Curran’s arrest was first reported. Curran said he hopes the final disposition of his case will quiet the rumors.

Curran has been on leave from his duties as the host of “The Bobby Curran Show” on KKEA-AM/ESPN 1420 and play-by-play announcer for University of Hawaii football and men’s basketball since the arrest. He is set to return to the radio today and will address the incident with listeners.
