Kauai firefighters responded to two calls of hikers in distress Thursday night, both near Makaleha Falls in Kapaa.
At around 6:45 p.m., three hikers reported they were lost and stranded on the trail. One of the hikers reported being severely cold and said she could not feel her legs, according to a county news release.
While on their way to respond, firefighters from the Kaiakea Fire Station received a second call about two other hikers also lost on the trail. The pair joined up with the first group of hikers at their location.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., firefighters set out on the trail and by 8:50 p.m. they found the hikers, who were able to walk out on their own. Everyone arrived safely at the trailhead around 9:45 p.m.
The five hikers, all visitors from California and New York, did not report any injuries and left in their private vehicles.
