Former Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui will be joining
the company that recently purchased 41,000 acres of mostly former Hawaiian Commercial &Sugar Co. land on Maui.
Mahi Pono LLC announced Sunday that
Tsutsui will become its
senior vice president of
operations and lead the company’s farming venture. The company previously hired the Maui native to help advise it on the
$262 million land purchase from Alexander &Baldwin Inc.
Tsutsui also will remain managing partner of Strategies 360, a Seattle-based public affairs and strategic communications firm.
Mahi Pono, a partnership between Pomona Farming LLC, a California agricultural company, and Public Sector Pension Investment Board, one of Canada’s largest pension investment managers, bought the
Valley Isle agricultural land last month.
The company said it is planning a range of agricultural operations, including the production of non-GMO foodstuffs for local consumption and possible export, and an agricultural park for local farmers.
