A 27-year-old Waimanalo woman began serving a five-year state prison term Thursday for a hit-and-
run crash that killed a 6-month-old boy in a stroller and injured the boy’s mother and 3-year-old brother.
State Circuit Judge Paul B.K. Wong sentence Annie Akau to
the five-year term Thursday and
ordered her immediately taken into custody. Wong also ordered Akau to pay $30,768 restitution to the state Department of Human Services for the cost of the medical care provided to her injured victims.
Akau pleaded guilty in September to negligent homicide, three reduced hit-and-run charges and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license. The original charges of leaving the scene carried maximum 10-year prison terms.
Honolulu police said Donovan Naleieha, his mother and his older brother were in a marked crosswalk on Kalanianaole Highway on Dec. 5, 2017, at Oluolu Street in Waimanalo when a pickup truck crashed into them. All three victims went by ambulance to separate hospitals. Naleieha died the following day.
Police said the pickup truck continued traveling for about
60 feet with the stroller underneath it before stopping. The driver then exited and fled on foot. Police identified Akau as the driver from security video at the 7-Eleven store nearby.
