The Navy football team continues to strengthen its Hawaii ties.
Former Hawaii receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann is set to join the Midshipmen as an offensive assistant coach. Stutzmann was an offensive intern with the Rainbow Warriors this season.
Stutzmann will be the fourth UH graduate on Navy’s 11-member, full-time coaching staff.
Head coach Kenny Niumatalolo is a former UH quarterback and assistant coach. Brian Norwood — Niumataolo’s teammate at UH and Radford — recently was hired as Navy’s co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach. This is Norwood’s second stint with Navy.
Ivin Jasper, a former UH quarterback, is Navy’s offensive coordinator.
When the contracts are finalized, which could be as early as today, Stutzmann will serve as a roving coach, working with the quarterbacks, receivers and A-backs. Navy’s hope is that it can expand the passing game out of the triple-option base.
Stutzmann has experience with the new-age passing attack. At Emory &Henry, he helped coach the so-called “spread-and-shred” attack that his older brother, Craig, implemented. That offense uses pass concepts to expand on the run-pass option that has become popular the past few years. Now the pass-game coordinator at UH, Craig Stutzmann has helped infuse the RPO into the run-and-shoot menu.
Billy Ray Stutzmann is a Saint Louis School alumnus who graduated a semester early to participate in UH’s spring ball prior to his freshman year on the Manoa campus. He had 27 starts in 44 games with the Warriors. He also coached at Western New Mexico.
