UH West Oahu breaks ground for new creative-media building
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Jan. 11 for the Academy for Creative Media building on the University of Hawaii’s West Oahu campus.
The facility will link complementary facilities and programs throughout the UH system and serve as “a catalyst for Hawaii’s intellectual property workforce,” according to a UH news release.
A base contract of $33.27 million was awarded to Kiewit Building Group and local architect firm Next Design for the 40,685-square-foot building, which will include a two-story soundstage for filming, a 100-seat screening room with Dolby Atmos mixing panel, editing and sound-mixing suites, a mill shop to create film sets, classrooms, computer labs and an “incubator” space for students to exchange entrepreneurial ideas. Plans also call for an outdoor screening area for special evening screenings and presentations.
“We started at UH Manoa with the first program, and now the ACM system is supporting 17 programs at all 10 campuses,” said Academy for Creative Media Director Chris Lee. “West Oahu is very special because it’s really been designed to be the hub for this entire system.”
The new facility is expected to being ready for classes in fall 2020.
