Hilton Grand Vacations has announced plans to build a new 388-unit timeshare resort on Maui’s southwestern coast — its first on that isle and its 10th timeshare in Hawaii.
Sales are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2020 for the Maui Bay Villas by Hilton Grand Vacation, which is located at 575 S. Kihei Road at a 27-acre site with oceanfront footage near Maalaea Bay. The initial phase, which includes
131 units within four buildings, is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2021.
Mark Wang, president and CEO, Hilton Grand Vacations, said in a statement, “Our customers consistently rank Maui as one of their top requests for expanding our portfolio of resorts, and we’re thrilled to add this spectacular destination for our owners and guests. Expanding our brand presence to a third Hawaiian Island will further support net owner growth by attracting new customers and enhancing the experience we offer our current owners.”
HGV is doing its part to add to Hawaii’s growing timeshare market. According to a visitor plant inventory report released Monday by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, timeshare units statewide in 2018 grew nearly 8 percent to 11,923. The inventory report, which was prepared by Kloninger &Sims Consulting LLC, said 861 timeshare units were added to the Hawaii market in 2018.
In recent investor guidance, HGV reported that it had captured more than
20 percent of the timeshare industry’s growth since 2009. Its strong presence in Hawaii has played a role in those results.
HGV opened the Grand Waikikian in Honolulu and Kings Land in Waikoloa in 2008 in the midst of the Great Recession, and by 2012 both were 80 percent sold. The approximately 418-unit Grand Islander by Hilton Grand Vacations also opened at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in 2017.
HGV told investors in January that over the next four years it would open at least 12 more projects, including two in Hawaii. One of them, the Ocean Tower by Hilton Grand Vacations Club in Waikoloa, will host a grand opening Feb. 7. The resort is HGV’s ninth property in Hawaii, fourth in Waikoloa and first on Hawaii island with direct oceanfront views.
The initial phase, which was completed in the fourth quarter of 2018, will convert existing hotel rooms within the Hilton Waikoloa Village into 72 timeshare units. Sales began in January 2018.
HGV also told investors that it is slated to open another timeshare around 2022 at the King’s Village site in Waikiki, where the company is moving through inventory quickly.
According to HTA’s visitor plant inventory report, there’s another 255-unit HGV timeshare tower in the Waikiki pipeline which would replace the existing Rainbow Bazaar at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
