The University of Hawaii baseball team will offer a sneak preview when it plays the alumni today in Les Murakami Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. There is no admission fee.
“I used to, as a young fired-up coach, really stay on our guys to make this a real game, a dress rehearsal for the season,” UH coach Mike Trapasso said. “In reality, the only similarities are we put the real uniform on rather than our practice uniform. But the alumni are there to have a great time, and we’re there to have a great time with our alumni. We want our guys to get some work in, but primarily it’s a fun day.”
As part of the pitching schedule leading to Friday’s opener against Portland, Dylan Thomas is scheduled to throw today. Thomas, who led Big West pitchers with 14 saves last season, has moved to the front of the pitching rotation.
Trapasso said Thomas’ availability depends on his progress from a blister he developed on his right (pitching) hand earlier in the week. Thomas did not not have problems during Thursday’s bullpen session.
Trapasso said today also is the scheduled throwing day for Scott Bellina, Colin Ashworth and Carter Loewen.
The Rainbow Warriors are expected to start catcher Dallas Duarte, first baseman Alex Baeza, third baseman Ethan Lopez, shortstop Maaki Yamazaki, center fielder Adam Fogel, and corner outfielders Scotty Scott and Jacob Sniffin. Jack Kennelly and Tyler Best are splitting time at second.
Trapasso said outfielder Brennen Hancock suffered a hamstring injury on Tuesday and might not be ready for the Portland series.
“We’re hoping it’s your typical hamstring, and he should be OK in a couple of weeks,” Trapasso said.
