HouseMart Ben Franklin Crafts stores is partnering with Radford High School to present its first Maker’s Explorium Saturday at the high school.
“This event will bring together one-of-a-kind crafters of original works and innovative makers,” said Melanie Ho, education specialist with HouseMart, Ace Hardware and Ben Franklin Crafts. “Attending Maker’s Explorium, you are supporting a local high school in their fundraising efforts and you can learn about the different programs they have for the students.”
Similar to a “maker fair,” which is popular on the mainland, the event is a showcase of science, technology, engineering, arts, math and the do-it-yourself spirit. It celebrates the power to imagine, create and share.
“This is a great venue for families to learn and get inspired to join the ‘maker movement’,” Ho said.
Radford High School’s automotive tech program students will set up a mini race track, where participants will be able to put together a car, then use CO2 (carbon dioxide) as the fuel to race each other. Students in the school’s culinary program will sell firecracker chicken, garlic chicken, Spam musubi and chocolate- covered pretzel rods.
There will be entertainment by the school’s band program, a showcase of up-and-coming anime artists Nikkoyen & Cocobun and several booths with interactive activities. At Hardware Science, a program under Ben Franklin Crafts, participants can use items from a hardware store to create simple and fun DIY science activities.
