The University of Hawaii softball team launched a school-record eight home runs in a 16-12 win over Fordham in the opening game of a doubleheader in the Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic on Friday in Las Vegas.
UH junior Callee Heen hit two homers and sophomore Madison Veldman’s two-run blast in the top of the sixth inning gave UH a 12-11 lead. Sophomore Emily Klee (2-0) earned the win in relief of starter Brittany Hitchcock.
In UH’s second game, senior Alyssa Sojka went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs in a 12-2 run-rule victory over UTEP. Brittnee Rossi drove in three runs and Bree Soma contributed a two-run double in support of freshman Izzy Dino, who picked up the five-inning complete-game victory. Dino (2-0) scattered seven hits, struck out one and walked two.
The Wahine (6-1) close the tournament with another doubleheader today against Weber State and Seattle.
UH Hilo men upset 12th-ranked Point Loma
Larry Bush scored 27 points and Kupaa Harrison added 14 as the Hawaii Hilo men’s basketball team upset Point Loma 81-77 on Thursday in San Diego.
Bush was 11-of-16 from the field for the Vulcans (11-10, 9-8 Pacific West).
Preston Beverly finished with 20 points and seven rebounds for the Sea Lions (20-4, 16-2), ranked No. 12 in Division II.
>> Mandi Kawaha scored 17 points and Allie Navarette had 12 points and 11 rebounds, but the Hawaii Hilo women’s basketball team lost to Point Loma 87-72 in San Diego.
The Vulcans fell to 7-14, 4-13 PacWest, while the Sea Lions improved to 14-10, 13-5.
