Hawaii beach volleyball players Ari Homayun and Julia Scoles earned the first Big West pairs of the week award of the beach volleyball season on Tuesday after going 3-1 at last week’s Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Classic.
Homayun, a senior, and Scoles, a junior, picked up their three victories in straight sets playing at Flight 3. The duo’s wins were by an average margin of 9.3 points per set, highlighted by the 21-16, 21-9 sweep of Skylar Caputo and Jenna Tunnell of then-No. 4 Pepperdine.
Scoles also was named the best attacker at the Kahanamoku Classic.
The No. 6 SandBows (2-2) next compete at the East Meets West Challenge on March 9-10 at Manhattan Beach, Calif. Hawaii will face No. 4 LSU (4-0), No. 5 Florida State (4-1), No. 9 Florida International (4-0) and TCU (2-2).
Vulcans fall in PacWest women’s hoops
Sara Shimizu scored a team-high 13 points and knocked down three 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough as Notre Dame de Namur defeated Hawaii Hilo 59-46 in a Pacific West Conference women’s basketball game on Tuesday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.
Allie Navarette recorded a double-double (12 points, 13 rebounds) in the loss for the Vulcans (8-16 overall, 5-15 PacWest Conference).
Former Konawaena standout guard Lindsay Bates had 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the win for the Argonauts (7-16, 6-13). The win gave NDNU its fourth straight victory.
The Vulcans end their season hosting Chaminade on Saturday, with tip-off set for 5 p.m.
