The University of Hawaii Hilo baseball team won both of its games against Concordia Irvine in Irvine, Calif., on Monday.
The Vulcans (10-11, 8-6 PacWest) scored 22 runs with 32 hits over the two games, leading to a 10-6 win in the first game and a 12-7 victory in the second.
In the second game, the Vulcans overcame a one-run deficit going into the seventh. They tied it with an RBI single by senior Kyle Yamada and scored six runs in the top of the eighth to secure the win.
In the first game the Eagles (10-13, 5-3 PacWest) almost had a comeback of their own, tying the game 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth. But the Vulcans scored a run in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, and three more in the ninth.
HPU wins big over Dominican
The Hawaii Pacific softball team swept a doubleheader against Dominican (Calif.) on Monday at Howard A. Okita Field in Kaneohe by 10-2 and 8-0 scores.
In the first game, the Sharks had 11 hits to end the game after five innings. They scored in every inning except the bottom of the second.
In the second game, the Sharks (22-16, 15-8 PacWest) were led by junior Emilee Leonard’s three hits and two RBIs. Senior Jordan Curry pitched all five innings, striking out five batters and allowing two hits.
Berrelleza named freshman of the week
Chaminade softball player Marlisa Berrelleza was named the PacWest Conference softball freshman of the week on Monday.
The native from Indio, Calif., hit .363 in seven games with two homers, four RBIs and two runs. Berrelleza leads the team in batting with a .407 average, which is tied for the lead in the PacWest.
