Senior Ari Homayun became the fourth Rainbow Wahine to reach 100 career wins and No. 6 Hawaii rallied for a 3-2 beach volleyball win over No. 17 Grand Canyon in Phoenix on Thursday. Homayun joins Ka’iwi Schucht (103), Nikki Taylor (103) and Katie Spieler (100) in the century club.
Hawaii (11-4) trailed 2-0 before picking up wins at Flights 1, 2 and 3. The clinching point came at No. 3, with Morgan Martin-Pani Napoleon defeating Mikaela Raudseep-Teagan DeFalco 21-15, 21-17, snapping the ’Lopes’ six-match winning streak and dropping GCU to 10-3.
Homayun and Julia Scoles tied the match at 2-2 with a 21-16, 21-16 win over GCU’s Bella Bauman-Jessica Stansfield.
“We’re happy to get a win on the road, GCU is always a tough place to play and they tested us,” Hawaii coach Jeff Hall said. “We’ll need to play better tomorrow to beat the teams we’re playing this weekend.”
Hawaii is at the Arizona State Invitational, playing No. 5 Pepperdine and the host Sun Devils today. On Saturday, the SandBows face No. 2 USC and ASU again.
UH’s Hines finishes 28th at NCAAs
University of Hawaii junior Phoebe Hines placed 28th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:41.58 and failed to qualify for the finals at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday in Austin, Texas.
Hines will compete in the 200 freestyle and sophomore teammate Karolina Hajkova will swim in the 100 backstroke today.
UHH baseball loses to No. 20 Azusa Pacific
The Hawaii Hilo baseball team allowed seven runs in the sixth inning in a 10-2 loss to No. 20 Azusa Pacific on Thursday in Azusa, Calif.
Kyle Yamada and RJ Romo each had two hits for the Vulcans (10-12, 8-7 PacWest). The Cougars improved to 17-9, 7-2.
Vulcans softball falls to Biola
Chloe Domingo had a two-run single in the fourth inning, but the Hawaii Hilo softball team lost to Biola on Thursday in La Mirada, Calif.
The Vulcans dropped to 17-7, 12-4 PacWest, while the Eagles improved to 12-10, 7-5.
