It’s what Hawaii’s two spring transfers brought to the Stan Sheriff Center court in Friday’s spring exhibition volleyball match. The two former teammates at Oregon — libero Kyra Hanawahine and outside hitter Jolie Rassmussen — brought experience and much-needed depth to the Rainbow Wahine lineup that had been affected by flu and other ailments during spring break.
Rasmussen had match highs of 28 kills and 21 digs — notching a double-double by Set 2 — and Hanawahine stabilized the passing and added 10 digs, but it was not enough. Reigning Big 12 champion Texas used a 7-1 start in Set 5 to pull out a 19-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 15-12 victory in front of 1,564 that lasted 2 hours and 32 minutes.
The Longhorns got 24 kills from Logan Eggleston, last season’s Big 12 freshman of the year, and 16 from reigning Big 12 player of the year Micaya White. Texas also took advantage of its height advantage, finishing with a 14-3 blocking edge, the 6-foot-4 Brionne Butler in on five and 6-3 middles Asjia O’Neal and Orie Agbaji each with six.
Hawaii also got a double-double from McKenna Ross (15 kills, 14 digs). Sky Williams, the Wahine’s lone middle, played the entire match in the front row and finished with 13 kills.
“Considering all that we went through the past two weeks, I thought we did well,” Hawaii coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos said. “Jolie and Kyra did really well out there.”
The Wahine haven’t been able to have a full practice the past week, down to five players most days.
“I think we did really well,” Rasmussen said. “I think coming out and giving that kind of performance without having any real practices … it’s really promising for the season.
“We had a couple of girls out with the flu and I was out with food poisoning. It was a little rough, but we showed resilience and I’m really happy how everyone played. Kyra did phenomenal. The whole team really stepped up.”
There were several questions coming into the night, including whether Hawaii would have enough stamina to go beyond three sets; the Wahine canceled practice earlier in the week.
Then, too, there was a problem with officials, which led to Hawaii assistant Kaleo Baxter atop the stanchion as the first referee.
Texas used two setters, going with Maryknoll graduate Jhenna Gabriel in the first two sets and Ashley Shook the final three. Gabriel had 16 assists and Shook 28.
Hawaii setter Norene Iosia finished with 56 assists. Hanawahine had two of the Wahine’s five aces.
