A preliminary hearing is set for a convicted felon accused of shooting an acquaintance twice in the leg in Kalihi.
The hearing for Richard An Lam, 27, is scheduled to be held Wednesday at Honolulu District Court after prosecutors charged him Friday with second-degree assault and three firearm charges. His bail is set at $200,000.
Second-degree assault is a Class C felony that carries penalties of up to five years in prison.
Police said a suspect later identified as Lam and a 22-year-old man got into an argument fronting an apartment building on Waiakamilo Road at about 3:30 p.m. March 17.
Lam allegedly brandished a gun and shot the victim, 22, twice in the left leg. Court documents that provide details on the shooting indicated a bystander then attacked Lam, who fled.
The victim’s relative took him to The Queen’s Medical Center in stable condition.
Police located Lam in Waianae on Thursday and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder and firearm offenses.
Lam has a criminal record of felony assault and felony promotion of a dangerous drug in connection with a 2013 stabbing in the Keeaumoku area.
Police responded to a report of a brawl on Sheridan Street on the morning of March 31, 2013. Court documents said Lam, then 21, and a 22-year-old man were involved in a physical fight when Lam stabbed the victim multiple times with a knife.
The man sustained two stab wounds to the right side of his chest and two stab wounds to his abdomen. A trauma surgeon told police the stab wounds to his chest punctured his right lung and caused it to collapse.
The man was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center where he underwent surgery.
Police said Lam fled the scene but that police located him. An officer conducted a search and found a baggie in his possession that contained “a white powdery substance resembling cocaine.”
Lam was sentenced to serve five consecutive weekends in prison, with credit for time served, and four years of probation.
