A Hawaii island dairy winding down operations after repeated wastewater violations has agreed to pay $79,000 to the state or to benefit the environment near the farm in Ookala.
The agreement is part of an administrative order on consent agreed to on Thursday between the state Department of Health and Big Island Dairy.
The department said the order will help ensure that the dairy closure is done responsibly and expeditiously.
Big Island Dairy in January agreed to stop milking cows by the end of last month and cease all commercial operations by the end of April as part of a federal Clean Water Act lawsuit settlement. The settlement also required cleanup of the site and payment of $450,000 to a community group and food safety organization that sued the company in June 2017.
In the state order, the dairy must pay $79,000 as an administrative penalty or to fund an environmental project by June.
Financial lessons and fair on tap
Bank of Hawaii volunteers will be going out to teach financial lessons Thursday for Teach Children to Save Day. They will be at 30 schools across Hawaii, American Samoa and the West Pacific region.
Then on Friday the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Office of the Securities Commissioner will host the 13th annual Financial Literacy Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tamarind Park, Bishop Square, in downtown Honolulu.
As part of Financial Literacy Month, the Office of the Securities Commissioner is hosting an informational fair to provide free financial literacy information to the general public. The event will feature government agencies and nonprofit organizations that will provide materials on saving and investing, insurance, homeownership preparation, dealing with credit, planning for retirement, tips on preventing financial fraud and more.
“Our exhibitors will have great information and resources available for whatever stage you may be in — whether you’re just getting started, or preparing for retirement,” Securities Commissioner Ty Nohara said.
