Solar permits issued by Maui Country rose 7% to 142 in the first quarter from 133 in the year-earlier period but were down about 8% from 155 two years ago.
The Hawaiian Electric Cos. introduced two new solar interconnect agreement options — Customer Grid Supply Plus and Smart Export — about a year ago.
As of March 26 a total of 451 CGS+ and SE systems agreements had been executed on Oahu while there were 277 for Hawaii Electric Light Co. on the Big Island, according to Marco Mangelsdorf, who tracks rooftop solar permits and is president of Hilo-based ProVision Solar. But for Maui County there were no agreements for either a CGS+ or SE system.
”With MECO (Maui Electric Co.) not playing favorites as far as promoting one interconnect option over another, what accounts for this disparity?” Mangelsdorf asked. “The lack of Smart Export agreements across Maui County springs from the fact that the one California-based company, Sunrun, that’s responsible for well over 90 percent of the SE agreements on Oahu and Hawaii island has not been active in MECO territory, and Valley Island solar contractors have pursued other options.”
