Kahana Valley living park concept ‘broken’

Many Ahupua'a 'O Kahana State Park residents are frustrated about the state Department of Land and Natural Resources' management of the park. Portions of Kahana are marred by sights of dilapidated structures, broken vehicles and junked yards.

Jim Anthony and his wife Grace walked among the large taro last week on a property they lease in Ahupua‘a ‘O Kahana State Park, a living cultural park that stretches from the mountain to the shoreline. The couple harvest taro and other crops and host educational visits. In lieu of rent, the park lessees are required to devote 25 hours monthly to programs on traditional Native Hawaiian cultural practices.

A dock at the Kahana Bay boat ramp is in such serious need of repair it poses a safety hazard. Big chunks of the adjacent parking lot are also missing. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources, which manages the park, is working with state Sen. Gil Riviere, whose district includes Kahana, to get money from the Legislature to fix the boat ramp.

An unoccupied and incomplete house towers over weeds at the end of Kahana Valley Road. The splendid natural beauty of the 5,249-acre, 8.2-square-mile park is marred by dilapidated homes and unsightly properties.
