The Agbayani sisters — one with her bat, the other with her arm — led the ‘Iolani softball team to a 6-2 victory over St. Francis on Saturday at Ala Wai Field.
Aleia Agbayani doubled, homered and drove in three runs and Ailana Agbayani pitched 41⁄3 scoreless innings of relief with eight strikeouts for the No. 4 Raiders (10-3) in the ILH contest.
‘Iolani coach Benny Agbayani once again had the privilege of watching his daughters lead the team to victory.
“You want every moment with your kids, to experience what they go through,” said Benny Agbayani, who played in the major leagues from 1998 to 2002. “It’s not only my kids, it’s all of these girls I have on my team. I feel like they’re all my kids.”
‘Iolani took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Aleia Agbayani’s two-run homer and Kai Barrett’s solo shot off Sierrah Kupihea.
“I honestly just went up there and was just trying to get on base,” said Aleia Agbayani, a senior. “I want to be ahead from the start. Our team works really well if we’re on top of these teams.”
Said Benny Agbayani: “You really want to start off the game well, especially as the visitors. They had a good pitcher going against us and we were very fortunate to jump on the scoreboard quick.”
In the second, Aleia Agbayani added a two-out RBI double.
The No. 8 Saints (8-4) cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the second when Julianne Johnson belted a two-run homer off a hanging changeup from Allie Capello.
The Raiders tacked on a run in the fourth on Anna Arita’s two-out RBI single and one more on Barrett’s single in the fifth.
“Adding insurance runs gives us more confidence on defense and little more of a cushion,” said Barrett, a senior.
Ailana Agbayani, who started at shortstop, allowed three singles and didn’t walk a batter in her relief stint. None of the Saints’ baserunners she allowed got past first base.
The freshman said her curveball and drop-in were working well for her in the circle.
“I just like to hit my spots, and if they put it in play, I know I have my defense to back me up,” Ailana Agbayani said.
Saints coach Randy Langsi said his team just couldn’t get into any rhythm against Ailana Agbayani.
“We were just more or less guessing where it was pretty much,” Langsi said. “We didn’t help ourselves today at the plate. She did a great job, kept us off balance today.”
‘Iolani got back at St. Francis, which won the teams’ previous contest 7-4 on March 14.
“The energy of our team this time around against them was way better,” Aleia Agbayani said.
