Joshua Lee belted a two-run homer and an RBI double as Waipahu clinched first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II standings with a 9-4 win over Radford at Donald M. Kimura Field on Wednesday.
Waipahu is 9-0 and has one game left, at Waialua (5-4), on Saturday before the playoffs. Radford, which had already sewn up second place and a first-round bye in the league playoffs, will visit Nanakuli (0-9).
“We knew we had the bye locked up, but for us it’s about trying to build a winning culture, learning how to win,” Waipahu coach Ian Ferris said. “We’ll probably see (Radford) again at some point. Josh getting us started with that home run in the first inning took a little bit of the pressure off.”
When the teams met in the season opener, Waipahu eked out a 9-7 win as Radford committed six errors. This time, the Rams buckled again with seven errors. Only three of the Marauders’ runs were earned against Radford’s Tommy Tereschuk and Daniel May.
“We didn’t play defense. That’s the bottom line,” Rams coach Jacob Sur said. “We’ve been hitting, but the two games we didn’t play defense were against Waipahu. Hopefully, this serves as motivation.”
Radford’s Tereschuk was up and down, allowing seven runs (three earned) on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.
“Tom didn’t have his curve and Waipahu is a good hitting team,” Sur said.
The Marauders benefited from two Radford errors in the top of the first. After Noah Takayama reached on a fielding error, Lee launched a high drive over the left-field fence 315 feet away. The home plate umpire ruled it a foul ball, but the base umpire called it fair, and Radford led 2-0.
In the third, Tereschuk plunked Takayama with a pitch, and he went second and third on wild pitches before scoring on a double by Lee. Chad Cadiente’s two-out double to left plated courtesy runner Jared Miyasato to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Shane Vogt was hit by pitch with two outs and advanced to second base on an errant pickoff throw by Jencen Villanueva. Matthew Lukins sent a ground ball to second, which was misplayed by second baseman Gavin Barcenilla. Center fielder Radlee Ferreira retrieved the ball and fired a throw in the direction of the infield, but the ball caromed off the side of Barcenilla’s head. Barcenilla left the game and did not return.
In the fourth, Riki Nishizawa singled, Ferreira reached base on an error and Takayama singled to load the bases. Jayden Borja then grounded to short, where Vogt was unable to knock the ball down, and Nishizawa and Ferreira scored to open Waipahu’s lead to 6-1.
The Rams came to life in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on an RBI single by Vogt, a sacrifice fly by Richard Akana III and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch with Carter Ogino at the plate against reliever Brendan Kumasaka.
With the lead cut to 6-4, the Marauders regained momentum with three runs in the top of the sixth, gifted by three Radford miscues.
With the bases loaded, Takayama grounded to second, where Radford committed an error, allowing Nishizawa and Ferreira to score. With two outs, Borja doubled to center, scoring Viloria for a 9-4 lead.
The Rams will be back to work on the practice field.
“We’re going to move on. Come tomorrow, you move past it. It’s how you finish that matters,” Sur said.
