Hawaii senior Emily Maglio and junior Amy Ozee were named the AVCA/CollegeBeachVB.com’s pair of the week on Tuesday after going 5-0 at Flight 1 at last week’s First Foundation Queen’s Cup.
The pair improved to 19-4 for the sixth-ranked Rainbow Wahine (24-7). Maglio and Ozee defeated pairs from Washington, San Jose State (twice) and No. 14 Loyola Marymount (twice), earning the critical point in the two 3-2 victories over LMU at Queen’s Beach.
This is the second pair to garner the national award from Hawaii. Maglio won it with former partner Ka’iwi Schucht in March 2018.
Mejia named PWC softball pitcher of week
Hawaii Hilo pitcher/hitter Isabelle Mejia was named the Pacific West Conference pitcher of the week on Monday.
For Mejia, it’s her third overall award this season, as she’s been a two-time recipient of the pitcher of the week award in addition to receiving the offensive player of the week award a few weeks ago.
Last week, Mejia allowed two runs over 12 innings while recording two wins. In those games against Academy of Art, the Arcadia, Calif., native struck out 12 batters.
The Vulcans (28-15 overall, 21-9 PacWest) host Chaminade on Saturday in a doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
Seeds out for PWC tennis championships
The Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis team drew the top seed for this week’s Pacific West Conference championships, which begin Thursday in Surprise, Ariz.
The Sharks meet Holy Names in the first round, while No. 2 seed UH-Hilo plays Biola at the same time. The Vulcans are the only team to beat the Sharks this season.
>> HPU’s women are the second seed in their tournament, behind Academy of Art.
The Sharks earned a bye and will play either Cal State LA or Holy Names in the second round on Thursday.
UH-Hilo is the only other Hawaii school in the tournament and drew Point Loma in the first round, with the winner meeting No. 4 seed Sonoma State.
