Column: Credit condensation level for clouds’ flat bottoms

The bottom of a cloud sits at the condensation level, where the air below is too warm for water to condense and too cold above for water to remain as a vapor. The result is a temporary boundary, the condensation level, which is flat. Clouds hang in the air during a tennis match at the U.S. Open in New York.
