Cal State Fullerton jumped on Hawaii starter Brittany Hitchcock early and held on to defeat the Rainbow Wahine 4-2 in a key Big West Conference softball series opener in Fullerton, Calif.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Hitchcock (14-6 overall and 6-1 in conference) and dropped the Wahine to 27-11 overall and 8-2 in the Big West. Cal State Fullerton is 28-15 and 8-2.
Callee Heen launched her 13th homer in the seventh. The teams meet in a series-ending doubleheader today.
Homayun, Scoles earn weekly pairs honor
Ari Homayun and Julia Scoles of the Rainbow Wahine beach volleyball team have been named the Big West pairs team of the week for the third time this year.
Homayun and Scoles went 5-0 last weekend and helped Hawaii win the First Foundation Queen’s Cup. Scoles was named the tournament’s most outstanding player, while Homayun won the aloha spirit award.
The tandem is now a team-best 25-5 this season and has helped the Rainbow Wahine win 12 of their last 13 matches.
