Three records were set Friday in the trials of the Island Movers/HHSAA State Track and Field Championships.
Baldwin’s Rey Cadiz broke his own record in the 110-meter hurdles, running it in 14.19 seconds. That was one-hundredth of a second faster than the 14.20 he ran in last year’s trials. The 14.19 is also the fastest time of anyone in Hawaii this season. Previously this year, Cadiz ran a 14.28.
The Saint Louis 4×100 relay team shattered the previous mark of 42.18 seconds set by Punahou last year. The Crusaders’ Roman Wilson, Keanu Wallace, Korvin Feagins and Keola Yadao ran a 41.54 on Friday.
Wilson also had the fastest 100-meter dash at trials — a 10.70 that tied Seabury Hall’s Noah Payne for the best in Hawaii so far this season. The state-meet record is 10.63. Five other runners ran sub 11-seconds in the trials, setting up a big showdown in today’s final.
Some event finals were on Friday, including the boys high jump, where Feagins won by tying his own Hawaii season high of 6 feet, 7 inches, but falling short of the state-meet record of 6-9.
Kamehameha’s Tanner Moku, who set an ILH championship record in the 300 hurdles two weeks ago, broke the state-meet mark Friday, running it in 38.07 to surpass Maui’s Dana Navarro-Arias’ 38.10 from 1999.
Moku’s 37.99 from the ILH title meet is still the best in Hawaii so far in 2019.
Defending state champion Tianna Powell of Baldwin cleared the bar in 11-9 to win the pole vault final and that height is the best in Hawaii this year.
Four other performances were the best in Hawaii this year:
>> Defending champion Chenoa Frederick won the long jump final with a leap of 18-2.75.
>> Punahou’s Stevie Marvin, Grace Blanchette, Kaylie Klausing and Katie Weeshoff ran a 49.88 in 4×100 relay trials.
>> Radford’s Kendall Saxton, Ethan Bean, Michael Edwards and Clayton Edwards ran a 3:24.32 in the boys 4×400 relay trials.
>> Seabury Hall’s Madee Dougherty, Chloe Gangnath, Ameera Waterford and Elly Swartzran a 4:04.95 in the in the girls 4×400 relay trials.
Other finals winners Friday were: Waipahu’s Jocelyn Saribay in the shot put (37-11), Kaimuki’s Antrone Cliff in the triple jump (44-6.25), and Punahou’s Kennedy Freeman in the discus (151-9).
Some events that are expected to be intensely fought in today’s finals are:
>> Girls 100: Mililani’s Mackenzie Reed ran a 12.43 on Friday, followed by Mic-Pacific’s Amy Warrington in 12.46.
>> Girls 200: Reed and Warrington went 1-2 on Friday — in 25.86 and 25.97.
>> Boys 1500: Hanalani’s Adam Harder, the state cross country champion, ran a 4:13.78. Four others were right behind, but in front of McKinley’s Narayana Schneider, who ran a 4:21.16. Schneider has the best time in Hawaii in 2019 so far at 4:01.61.
>> Girls 300 hurdles: Campbell’s Leilani Leopard ran a 44.96, followed by Radford’s Naomi Bates in 45.56, but both have done better this season, led by Bates’ 44.33.
Organizers, to avoid possible rain in the late afternoon, have moved the time of every originally scheduled field and running event up one hour for today’s finals.
