The complex problem of replacing short-term permits with long-term water leases wasn’t resolved by the Legislature this past session, leaving certain water users from Kau to Kauai in peril of losing their source of water at the end of the year — the deadline for transition imposed by statute.
So it was good to hear that state Sens. Kai Kahele and Jarrett Keohokalole intend to work with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources to figure out a solution before the water dries up. It seems that none of the interested parties, including Gov. David Ige, can think of a timely fix. Stay tuned.
Congratulations, graduates!
Congrats to the mortar-board-wearing scholars taking part in spring commencement ceremonies and other festivities. University of Hawaii-Manoa helped usher in grad season on Saturday, with some 2,200 degree-holders convened in exercises at Stan Sheriff Center. Altogether, more than 4,800 students are set to graduate from Hawaii’s 10 public higher-education campuses.
At the high school level, the state Department of Education is prepping to award Class of 2019 diplomas to some 10,000 seniors statewide, with the first wave of school ceremonies slated to start on Friday.
