University of Hawaii tennis player Petra Melounova fought back to win her first-round match at the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships on Monday in Orlando, Fla.
The junior from the Czech Republic took down LSU’s Jessica Golovin in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the second round. The win marks the second time Melounova has won her NCAA first-round match and she is the only Rainbow Wahine to win a match in the NCAA singles tournament. She knocked off No. 16 Texas A&M’s Rachel Pierson in straight sets as a freshman.
Melounova, ranked 61st in the country, will face 47th-ranked Chiara Lommer of Michigan in the second round today at 4 a.m. at the USTA National Campus.
Chaminade men’s hoops adds pair
Chaminade men’s basketball head coach Eric Bovaird announced Monday the additions of Akot “Bill” Awet and Kevin Kremer for the 2019-20 season.
Awet is a transfer from Division I Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The 6-foot-8 forward from Sydney, Australia, averaged 1.5 points and 1.6 rebounds at SIUE over 26 games.
Kremer is a transfer from the University of Utah, where he was a redshirt freshman this past season. In his senior year at Pleasant Valley (Calif.) High School, he averaged 18.5 points and 8.4 rebounds. He was named the Cal-Hi 2018 CIF Division III State Player of the Year.
