Brigham Young Invitational final vs. BYU
Hawaii wins 25-20, 25-17, 25-14
Smith Fieldhouse … where many great teams have left in defeat. It had happened 25 times — and 15 straight — for the Warriors.
Not this season. Hawaii won for just the fourth time when facing host BYU, and did so in convincing fashion. Senior hitter Stijn van Tilburg hit .500 with 13 kills and just one error and had three of the team’s 10 aces.
Also finishing with three aces were senior setter Joe Worsley and junior opposite Rado Parapunov. Junior middle Patrick Gasman had 10 kills, hitting .900, and was in on five of the 8.5 blocks.
Hawaii capped the sweep on a 5-0 closing run that saw three kills by van Tilburg and two aces by Worsley, including the match-ender. It was the first time the Warriors swept the Cougars in Provo and was Hawaii’s first win over host BYU since 2003.
The Warriors went 3-0 at the BYU Invitational with sweeps of McKendree and Princeton.
