A 21-year-old man was in critical condition Saturday after being pulled from waters around Spitting Cave in Portlock.
According to an Emergency Medical Services report, the man jumped into the ocean but was unable to make his way back out. Lifeguards responding by land and sea reached the man before he went underwater and transported him via personal watercraft to the Maunalua Bay boat ramp in Hawaii Kai. Waiting paramedics administered advanced lifesaving treatment before transporting him to a hospital.
Featured on websites devoted to adventure tourism, Spitting Cave is a cove where turbulent wave action pushes water to the back wall only to be spit back out, often in violent fashion. Many visitors jump into the churning ocean from the cliffs above, putting themselves at danger of striking the surrounding rocks, getting swept out to sea, or being smashed against the cliff by incoming waves.
Since 2000, at least eight people have died and scores of others have been rescued due to incidents there.
